Indonesia – The Circle
Indonesia
Komodo,
By Sea
Ancient dragons, pink beaches, wild islands and a week at sea moving through one of Indonesia’s most extraordinary corners.
Why Komodo
Dragons, pink beaches and reefs like nowhere else.
Komodo has always fascinated me because it feels almost prehistoric.
The dragons are the obvious draw: enormous, ancient-looking animals that exist in the wild nowhere else on Earth. But it’s really the combination that gets me. Dry, dramatic islands. Pink-sand beaches. Brilliant water. Reefs full of life.
I love the idea of exploring the region slowly by boat, moving between islands, getting off to walk and then slipping back into the water to snorkel or dive.
It feels wild, beautiful and just strange enough to be irresistible.
The Journey I’m Imagining
A week at sea between Bali and Komodo.
I wouldn’t want to treat Komodo as a quick flight-in, flight-out experience. The version that appeals to me most begins in Bali and unfolds slowly by sea, with the boat becoming part of the journey rather than simply transportation.
Chapter One
Bali & Embarkation
Begin in Bali, then board for a week of island-hopping east toward Komodo. I like the idea of starting somewhere familiar and watching the landscape get progressively wilder as we move away from shore.
- A relaxed start in Bali before sailing
- Board a small expedition yacht
- Let the journey begin by sea
Chapter Two
Moyo, Komodo & Rinca
The dragons are still the anchor, but I love that the route can build toward them. Moyo Island adds waterfalls and a quieter nature reserve before the landscapes of Komodo and Rinca take over.
- Moyo’s waterfalls and protected landscapes
- Guided walks in Komodo dragon habitat
- Time on Rinca and Komodo without turning the encounter into a race
Chapter Three
Padar, Pink Beaches & Open Water
This is where the journey gets wonderfully visual: ridgelines, small bays, beaches in impossible shades and long stretches of water between islands.
- A sunrise or early-morning walk on Padar
- Pink-sand beaches and quiet coves
- Time to swim, snorkel, kayak or paddleboard somewhere beautiful
Chapter Four
Below the Surface
The marine world is a huge part of the appeal. Komodo’s reefs, currents and clear water make this as much a sea journey as a wildlife trip on land.
- Snorkeling or diving depending on the group
- Coral gardens, rays, turtles and rich marine life
- Flexible days shaped by conditions, with kayaking, paddleboarding or skiff rides when they suit the moment
What I’d Want From This Journey
Wild enough to feel remote. Comfortable enough to stay awhile.
I’d want the itinerary to balance the prehistoric, the beautiful and the underwater world without over-scheduling any of it.
Aqua Blu is one example of the style I have in mind: a 15-cabin expedition yacht carrying 30 guests, with guided hikes, snorkeling and diving, kayaking, paddleboarding and skiff excursions woven into the sailing.
The dragons
Not as a quick photo stop, but with enough time to walk through the landscapes where they actually live.
The yacht
I want the yacht to be part of the experience: small enough to feel intimate, comfortable enough to look forward to returning to after a full day outside.
The reefs
The world underwater should matter just as much as the one above it, with time to snorkel or dive when conditions are right.
The contrast
Dry savanna, bright beaches, steep islands and impossibly blue water all packed into the same small corner of Indonesia.
Dragons unchanged for millions of years, pink beaches, reefs like nowhere else. That is a pretty hard combination to resist.
A Few Things I’d Hope For
The moments that would make the trip.
The first dragon
That slightly surreal moment when something that looks prehistoric is suddenly walking through the landscape in front of you.
A ridge above the sea
Climbing high enough to see the islands folding into one another across the water.
A pink beach with nowhere to be
Enough time to swim, wander and resist the urge to immediately move on.
Dropping into the reef
That first look underwater when the color and movement suddenly replace everything above the surface.
Coming back aboard
A hot shower, a good dinner and the feeling that the yacht is carrying you toward somewhere completely different overnight.
A completely empty horizon
One of those rare stretches of travel when there is simply not much around except sea and sky.
Who Might Love This
Travelers who like their wildlife with a little saltwater and adventure.
This would suit travelers who are comfortable climbing in and out of boats, walking on uneven terrain, spending plenty of time outdoors and letting weather and sea conditions shape the day. You should probably also be at least a little delighted by the idea of sharing an island with a giant lizard.
Where Things Stand
A wild idea beginning to take shape.
The exact sailing, number of nights and balance between walking, wildlife and time in the water still need to be worked out. One version I’m especially drawn to is a seven-night Bali-to-Komodo expedition aboard a small yacht, with Moyo, Komodo, Rinca, Padar and the smaller islands shaping the route.

Curious Too?
Put Komodo on your someday list.
If dragons, wild islands and reefs have your attention too, add your name. We’ll keep you in the loop as the journey develops.
