A Journey in Development for Fall 2027
R. Crusoe & Son is currently developing a small group journey to Okinawa, Japan’s southern islands, for Fall 2027.
Distinct from mainland Japan, Okinawa has its own Ryukyuan history, island culture, food traditions, and sense of place. It is also one of the regions most closely associated with longevity, community, and everyday well-being, ideas that remain deeply woven into daily life.
This Okinawa small group journey is being designed as a thoughtfully paced exploration of culture, landscape, foodways, and philosophy, with time for guided discovery, local encounters, gentle movement, and reflection.
Why Okinawa
This journey is being shaped by Rachel Dorsey of R. Crusoe & Son.
Rachel first lived in Okinawa while teaching English through the JET Programme, an experience that began her long connection to Japan and continues to influence the way she thinks about meaningful travel.
Okinawa remains one of the places that most shaped her perspective: deeply connected to nature, layered with history, and culturally distinct from the better-known images of Japan. This journey grew from a desire to return with travelers in a way that feels curious, personal, and unhurried.
What This Okinawa Journey Explores
The journey is still in development, but we are currently shaping it around several themes:
- Okinawan longevity, daily rhythm, and the idea of ikigai
- Ryukyu culture, history, craft, and living traditions such as eisa drumming
- Food traditions, markets, village life, and local ingredients
- Sacred landscapes, coastal scenery, and quiet natural spaces
- Encounters with guides, artisans, and community members
- Gentle movement, time outdoors, and opportunities for reflection
- A slower, more grounded way of experiencing Japan
The pace is intentionally measured, but not passive. We expect to include regular opportunities for walking, cultural immersion, and active exploration, while leaving room for the subtler experiences that often make a journey memorable.
Who This May Suit
This Okinawa journey may appeal to travelers who are curious about Japan beyond Tokyo, Kyoto, and the classic first-time route.
It is especially well suited to those who enjoy cultural depth, small group travel, thoughtful pacing, and destinations that reveal themselves gradually. It may also appeal to travelers interested in food, wellness, longevity, island cultures, and the quieter side of Japan.

Refundable Early Commitment
Because this is expected to be a small group experience, we are asking for a $1,000 per person refundable early commitment from travelers who would like to hold a place while the journey is being finalized.
This refundable commitment helps us understand the level of serious interest, shape the group thoughtfully, and continue refining the itinerary with the right travelers in mind.
As the journey details, dates, and pricing are finalized, we will share updates with those on the early interest list. If the final trip is not the right fit, the commitment may be refunded.

Optional FAQ Section
I’d add this near the bottom. It helps the page answer real traveler questions, and it gives Google more context. I would not worry too much about FAQ schema unless your website setup makes it easy. Google’s FAQ structured data is now more limited in how it appears in search, though it can still help clarify page structure when implemented correctly.
