Travel Inspiration: Rwanda Gorilla Trekking
Forget King Kong. He was a surly, steroid-shooting figment of Hollywood’s imagination, designed to keep the box office busy. Want to get up-close-and-personal with the real thing? If so, come with us on a mountain gorilla trekking adventure on the magnificent slopes of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. We promise
a life-changing experience.
Kigali is the nation’s capital as well as its largest metropolis. An attractive city, it went through difficult times during the 1994 genocide. Today, it is a pleasant place. The main shopping and commercial area centers around the Hotel Mille Collines (seen in the film “Hotel Rwanda”), with the government district on neighboring Kaciyiru Hill.
Then to Volcanoes National Park for our chance to encounter gorillas and where you are assigned to a group of eight trekkers. The trek to each gorilla family can be quite short, but most days an hour or two of hiking each way is necessary. As you near, you might hear loud crashes or dull reverberating thuds. This is one of the most exhilarating and moving wildlife experiences imaginable.
This journey works wonderfully as an extension to an East African safari. (Kenya and Tanzania have extraordinary animals, but neither has mountain gorillas.)
